Roadmap of Punjab’s Education in Pakistan

Government of the Punjab province which is the population capital of all the provinces; has declared the budget for the fiscal year of 2017 – 2018 was announced on June 2, 2017. The overall budget for the year is whopping amount of 1.97 trillion PKR and the education part from the above mentioned amount is 345 billion PKR which is a very large amount for education.

The reserved amount for education in this year is 20 percent more than the amount reserved for the sector in last year as per Shahbaz Sharif who is the chief minister of Punjab. Also the very next day of the budget announcement, the chief minister held a round table meeting with his team to evaluate the overall performance of education sector and discuss about the progress on the roadmap of Punjab’s school system reforms which was a drive to bring in detailed improvement system of the schooling in Punjab. The said roadmap was launched back in 2010 when same CM of the province pledged to change the system for the betterment of the future.

The overall data suggests that there are more than 50,000 schools which are under the umbrella of Punjab Government in 36 districts of Punjab jurisdiction. The total number of the teachers which are working under the education ministry of the Punjab government are 400,000. The total number of the children which are enrolled in these schools are more than 11 million and with enrollment drives and more focus on education, the number is still increasing with every day passing.

45,000 schools out of this 50000 schools have been equipped with technology enabled and replaced the textbooks with the computer tablets which are provided by the Punjab Government. With the help of these tablets, the students of 6th to 10th grade are made able to study mathematics and other science subjects.

Another drive was carried out by the government to bring the kids which are working in the brick kilns under the landlord influence were rescued and were brought back to schools in all over the province. Since the government is worried about the index in an international Survey about the out of school kids ratio. The survey was carried out among 144 countries and Pakistan came on 143 having largest number of kids out of school.

To government has started the enrollment drives nationwide and the results are shown by PSES (Punjab School Education Survey) that 90 percent of the children which are aged between 5 to 9 years are now enrolled in the schools which has decreased the ratio of the out of school children to a large number.

Government of the Punjab has pledged to increase the number to 95% by the end of 2018 and is working on it efficiently. Allocating a 20 percent increased amount to education sector by the government is a proof that government wants to portray a brighter picture for the future. The government is focusing in the regions of Rahim Yar Khan, DG Khan, Rajanpur and Bahawalnagar where the ratio of out of school kids is maximum.
